Nellie Mae Turner Gilbert

–

London, Kentucky

Nellie Mae Turner Gilbert, 94, of London left this Earth for her home in Heaven on Monday, February 15, 2021. Surrounded by the comforting love of family, she passed in peace. To many who loved her most, she was known as Mom, Mamaw and Mimi. So admired by her family, she became a namesake to many grandchildren and great grandchildren, who now carry a never fading remembrance in her honor. Throughout her life, she was a light of faith guiding those she loved towards goodness and kindness. She dedicated her life to those she loved the most- God and her family. She served actively as a proud member of Fariston Christian Church, where she was the pianist for 60 years. Piano was only one of her many gifts. She had a talent for playing the piano with a remarkable softness that matched her own soft beauty. While she was famous for all her desserts, banana pudding and pies were her specialty. There have been heated debates over her best pie flavor, but it always comes down to chocolate and butterscotch. She would make one of each for special occasions. There are many other favorites of her dishes. She is remembered for having the best chicken and dumplings. Coleslaw, which she was an expert at, was so loved by her husband Martin that he had it with every meal. Another of her talents was sewing. She became a seamstress at a young age and was so skilled she made clothes for herself and for her family, some of which are still cherished today. Though most remarkable of all, was her gift for humbleness. She is remembered for bringing loved ones together. When her family was together, she always wanted them to sing. Another one of her favorite ways to spend time with family was playing games at the kitchen table while drinking homebrewed iced tea with lemon. Her favorites were Scrabble, cards, and Yahtzee. She taught her grandchildren and great grandchildren how to play these games. She taught them other important things too, like to always wash their hands, just not in the kitchen sink. There are many happy memories of singing and laughter that get to be remembered because she also taught how to turn the other cheek. The legacy she leaves behind is one of faith, kindness, and a love for family. She will be remembered as being stubbornly independent, modest, and humble. Her light continues to shine through all her family, whose lives have been made better by the wisdom, joy, and love she gave. Nellie leaves behind three daughters, Martina Yantis of London, Brenda Greer (Sam) of London, Annie Chesnut (Stephen) of Lexington; her daughter-in-law, Grace Boggs Gilbert; nine grandchildren, Dawn Yantis, Shawn Yantis, Cynthia Yantis, Angela Ross, Samantha Woods, Chastity Stringer, Amelia Binder, Rebecca Dattilo, Lucy Chesnut; eleven great grandchildren, Doug Yantis, Abryana Higgins, Nellie Greer, Sam Greer, Kash Buckles, Delanie Woods, Milla Binder, Jasper Binder, Corinne Datillo, Evelyn Dattilo, Clara Rose Dattilo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Martin Gilbert; her son, Michael Layne Gilbert; her brother, Inman Kash Turner; her sister, Velma Jean Clark; her son-in-law, James Yantis. The family would like to thank her special caregivers, Bitha Liford, and Ed Bowling with Hospice. Funeral services for Nellie Mae Turner Gilbert will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to Faith Christian Camp 808 Camp Road Annville, KY 40402
