Virginia Latane Cook

–

London, Kentucky

Virginia Latane Cook was born in 1928 to Leonard and Edna Young Green. She graduated from London High School as a member of the class of 1946. Latane met her future husband, James Finley Cook, in high school. They married and had a son, James Michael, who resides in London with his wife, Pearl. Latane’s grandson, also named Michael, resides in Texas. Latane and Jim were married fifty-three years at the time of Jim’s passing in 2000. Latane owned and operated Latane’s Town and Country which was a high-end ladies’ dress shop in London for many years. She served as President of the Junior Women’s Club of London. She enjoyed her close friends, and also athletics, especially golf. She won many golf championships. Latane was a life-long member of First Baptist Church. The origin of her somewhat unusual name is an interesting story. Her mother played the lead role in a French play, “The Winning of Latane,” at Sue Bennet College. Her future father was in the audience and exclaimed, “I’m going to marry that girl, and we’re going to name our first child ‘Latane’.” She was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings Malcom Lynn Green (1995), Edward Clarence Green (2008) and Letitia Betty Ann Green Hall (2022). Surviving Latane are her son Mike and his wife Pearl, brother-in-law Shirell Hall (Betty Ann’s husband), and sister Faye Green Shaffer and husband William Copeland. Extended family include 6 nieces and nephews, three grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Latane loved her hometown, she treasured her family and friends, and she was a faithful member of her church and community.
